- Get rid of negative self-talk.
One of the first things you can do to start improving your self-esteem is to get rid of negative self-talk. Negative self-talk is any type of internal dialogue that puts yourself down or makes you feel less than worthy. Some examples of negative self-talk include saying things like “I’m not good enough,” “I’ll never be successful,” or “I don’t deserve happiness.” If you find yourself engaging in negative self-talk, try to reframe your thoughts in a more positive light. For instance, instead of thinking “I’m not good enough,” try thinking “I’m doing my best and that’s good enough.” - Set intelligent goals.
Another way to improve your self-esteem is to set daily goals as well as long term goals. Often people set unrealistic timelines for achieving their dreams and goals and when they don’t happen overnight, they become depressed and give up. By breaking down our long-term goals into daily achievable actions or goals, it makes it easier to remain positive and celebrate our progress. As Confucius said, “the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.” Daily goals keep goals attainable. When you reach your daily goals, you’ll start to feel better about yourself and your abilities, which will boost your self- esteem. - Be kind to yourself.
Finally, one of the best ways to improve your self-esteem is to simply be kind to yourself. Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding that you would treat a friend or loved one. Forgive yourself for your mistakes and focus on the positive aspects of your life. Focus on what you do right and not your shortcomings. Remember, it’s a poor day indeed, when you haven’t done something right. When you start being kinder to yourself, you’ll start to see a significant improvement in your self-esteem.
